Analytical Capability

Note: This is not an exhaustive list. Any further information required on analytical capability or the methods and procedures used in testing are available upon contacting the laboratories. Sampling instructions are provided to the customer. Alternatively, appointed members of staff, on request, can collect the samples.


Includes ground water, surface water, seawater, and swimming pool waters

• Bacteriological Analysis:

Plate count, total coliforms, faecal coliforms, faecal streptococci, clostridium perfringens, cryptosporidium.

• Chemical Analysis:

Metals: Full suite of metals (lithium to lead).
Other: Conductivity, pH, chlorides, sulphates, sulphides, hardness, alkalinity, total dissolved solids, Langelier Index, nitrates, nitrites, ammonia, kjeldahl nitrogen, TON, TOC, potassium permanganate oxidisability, phenols, boron, surfactants, hydrocarbons, organochlorides, phosphates, fluorides, cyanides, chlorine, PAH, pesticides.

Water analysis can be carried out in order to ascertain compliance with the following regulations:

- Drinking water regulations
- Surface water {pollution scan, water pollution}
- Ground water regulations
- Regulations for water for the support of fish life
- Bathing water regulations
- Suitability or dairy farming (dairy hygiene)


Metals: Full suite (lithium to lead).
Toxicity testing: fish, bacteria, daphnia, and respirometry.
Other: Suspended solids, pH, settleable solids, dissolved solids, nitrates, ammonia, B.O.D., TOC, C.O.D., phosphates, phenols, surfactants, fats/oils/grease and hydrocarbons, PAH.

Sand, Aggregate, Stone & Concrete

Sand: Particle fractions, lime, organic matter, pH and particle description, hydraulic conductivity.
Aggregate: Particle fraction, particle size, pH, chloride, sodium, potassium, calcium, carbonate, silica, loss on ignition, lime, organic matter, particle description, water absorption, density.
Cement: Chlorides, sulphates and metals.
Concrete: Chlorides, sulphates, carbonation, cement content and silica.
Stone: Soundness and crushed stone value, pyrites, sulphates, chlorides.

Food Analysis


• Chemical Analysis

Metals: Full suite (lithium to lead).
Other: Moisture, fat, protein, carbohydrate, TVBN, ash, specific constituents - sugars, salt, preservatives, histamine in fish.

• Microbiological Analysis

TVC (at 30°C and 37°C), enterobacteriaceae, coliforms (including faecal coliforms), faecal streptococci, staphylococcus aureus, salmonella, listeria, yeast and moulds, shelf life testing.

Agricultural Materials & Contaminated Land



The laboratory tests a wide variety of soil samples annually, under various headings, mainly REPS, but also for contaminated land investigation, remediation and site investigations for structural development.

Metals: Full suite (lithium to lead).
Other: Lime requirement, pH, phosphorus, nitrogen, sulphur, chloride and iodide.

Soil from contaminated land:

Dutch intervention limit list, which includes a wide range of metals, inorganic and organic substances.

Soil for Percolation, Drainage & Structural development:

Density, structure, texture, bulk and particle density, hydraulic conductivity, organic matter.

Slurry/ Compost/ Sludge:

• Dry Matter
• pH
• Total and available Nitrogen
• Total and available Phosphorus
• Potassium
• Metals full suite
• Oxygen Uptake
• Microbiology if necessary

Fertilizers & Limestone:

Elements: Nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and sulphur.
Metals: Calcium and magnesium.
Other: TVN and fineness.
