What effect does increasing temperatures have on the natural climate?

Climate change refers to long-term alterations in Earth’s average weather patterns, including temperature, precipitation, wind patterns, and more. These changes are primarily driven by human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and natural gas), deforestation, industrial processes, and agricultural practices, which release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The most common and concerning greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O).

The accumulation of these greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere enhances the natural greenhouse effect, trapping heat from the sun and causing an overall increase in global temperatures. This phenomenon is often referred to as global warming, and it has far-reaching impacts on the planet’s climate and ecosystems.

In relation to weather, how has climate change led to environmental catastrophes?

Droughts and storm intensity will likely increase as global surface temperatures increase. Increasing water vapour in the atmosphere fuels more powerful storms. Climate change has indeed played a significant role in intensifying and exacerbating environmental catastrophes related to weather. Here are some ways in which climate change has contributed to these disasters:

  1. Increased Intensity of Storms: Warmer ocean temperatures provide more energy for hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones. This leads to more intense and destructive storms. We’ve witnessed this in the form of stronger hurricanes, like Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The increased moisture in the atmosphere due to higher temperatures also contributes to heavier rainfall during storms, leading to flooding.
  2. Prolonged and More Severe Droughts: Climate change can alter precipitation patterns, leading to prolonged and more severe droughts in some regions. Higher temperatures can also exacerbate these droughts by increasing evaporation rates. As a result, areas that rely on consistent rainfall for agriculture and water supply face water scarcity, crop failures, and food shortages. The prolonged droughts in California in recent years are a prime example.
  3. Wildfires: Rising temperatures and prolonged droughts create ideal conditions for wildfires to spread rapidly and become more destructive. Dry vegetation and forested areas become more susceptible to ignition. The increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires has devastating consequences, including loss of life, property, and natural habitats.

  • Earthquake in Morocco September 2023: The city of Marrakesh was hit by an earthquake (6.8 magnitude). Resulting in a death toll of 2,500. This figure is increasing as the search for survivors continues. In the past, Morocco has suffered earthquakes, but few in its history have been so powerful. This earthquake is Morocco’s deadliest since 1960.

  • European Summer Heatwave 2023: Temperatures hitting 40-42°C  in Southern Europe due to an anticyclone which is a high-pressure system that dominates the upper atmosphere with reduced cloud cover allowing for more solar radiation to reach the ground.

  • Quebec Forest Fires 2023: The forest fires resulted in the skies over cities in North America such as New York City turning to a yellow/orange colour. This led to air quality alerts being issued . Quebec’s fire season from mid-July through the end of August was around 50% more severe due to climate change, primarily caused by fossil fuel burning.
