What is Grass Testing & Who Needs It?

Grass testing is a process that allows farmers to check the nutritional quality of their grass. One key measure is dry matter digestibility. This shows how well animals can absorb nutrients from the grass. A digestibility rate of 70% or higher is considered good.

Grass testing on farms helps farmers ensure their animals get the nutrients they need for optimal health and performance. By analysing major and trace minerals in the grass, farmers can identify any deficiencies that might affect the health of their livestock.

Why is Grass Testing on Farms Important?

Before cutting grass for silage, it’s crucial to test its quality. The performance of livestock depends on the quality of the silage they consume. Poor silage can lead to several problems, including:

Nutritional Deficiencies: Poor silage might lack the necessary nutrients, leading to deficiencies in protein, energy, minerals, and vitamins.

Gastrointestinal Problems: Poor silage may contain harmful bacteria, mould, or toxins, causing digestive issues like diarrhoea, acidosis, or even death.

Fertility Issues: Poor silage can cause fertility problems such as reduced pregnancy rates, hormonal imbalances, and poor sperm quality. Toxins in the silage can also damage the reproductive system.

When & How to Conduct Grass Testing on Farms

Grass testing on farms should be done at various times during the growing season to monitor changes in nutrient levels. Samples should be taken before and after major grazing periods or fertiliser applications. These samples are then sent to a lab for analysis to determine their nutrient content.

For sampling, Teagasc recommends, “To get the most accurate result, it is best to sample a freshly opened bale or take the sample from deep into the pit. The sample should be placed in a Ziploc-type bag and kept cool. The sample should be posted to the lab as soon as possible afterwards. Samples left in a bag over the weekend in a car, for example, will deteriorate rapidly and give rise to inaccurate results.”
