A Young Irish Inventor’s Fight Against Microplastics in Water

Microplastics in water has become a big environmental problem. There are more than 51 trillion microplastic particles in the seas – 500 times more than stars in our galaxy. They are found in our oceans, rivers, and even in the food we eat. One young Irish inventor, Fionn Ferreira, is working hard to solve the issue of microplastic pollution.

Ferreira’s Inspiration

Fionn Ferreira grew up in Cork with a family of boatbuilders. As a kid, he would kayak along the Irish coasts, and he noticed more and more plastic trash washing up on the shores. He soon learned that microplastics—tiny plastic particles—were a major part of the problem. These particles not only pollute the water but also end up in the food chain, which is harmful to our health. “The problem was huge,” Fionn says. “I felt like I needed to do something to stop it.”

An Invention to Reduce Microplastics in Water

Fionn’s solution was simple but smart. He created a way to remove microplastics in water using a magnetic liquid called ferrofluid. This liquid sticks to the tiny plastic particles, and magnets can pull them out of the water. What’s great about this method is that it doesn’t need filters or chemicals and doesn’t create any waste. Plus, it’s safe enough to be used in drinking water.

Fionn’s invention is also very effective. The latest prototype, supported by actor Robert Downey Jr.’s Footprint Coalition, removes over 85% of the microplastics in water in a single pass. This success shows that Fionn’s method could be a big help in cleaning up our water.

Taking the Invention Further

Ferreira graduated with a BSc in chemistry from the University of Groningen, Netherlands, in 2022. He is currently completing a MSc in Chemistry at the University of Groningen. He is also working with the University of Texas to expand his invention so it can be used worldwide.

In 2020, Fionn started two companies, Fionn & Co. LLC and the Green Journey Coalition Inc., to keep working on his mission to clean the world’s oceans from microplastics in water. His work shows how young people can make a big difference in solving global problems. As Fionn says, “We can all work together to fight environmental challenges, no matter how old we are or what our background is.”

Ferreira’s Global Recognition

Fionn’s hard work has earned him important recognition. In 2023, he won third place in the Young Inventors Prize at the European Inventor Award. This award, given by the European Patent Office, honours young people under 30 who are creating solutions to global challenges and helping achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Fionn’s invention helps support UN SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation by promoting the safe use of water resources.

Conclusion for Ferreira’s Solution to Microplastics in Water

Fionn Ferreira’s invention offers a real solution to the problem of microplastic pollution. Another critical tool in the arsenal against microplastics is water monitoring. Detecting microplastics in the first place is the precursor to employing solutions like Ferreira’s. Southern Scientific offers water monitoring testing to help. Monitoring followed by interventions can drastically reduce microplastic pollution.
