County Armagh–based water bottling company Classic Mineral Water (CMW) was plunged into administration, marking a dramatic turn for the long-established firm.
In October 2024, contamination of their water supply compromised the safety of the company’s bottled water. They have since entered liquidation. This is despite securing a €4.4 million contract a year earlier to supply all 155 Aldi Ireland stores.

Details of the Classic Mineral Water Contamination
CMW, founded in 1948, is one of only two firms in Northern Ireland and four on the island to hold mineral water status. They are one of the largest independent suppliers of bottled mineral water in Ireland. CMW supplies water to companies such as Lidl, Dunnes, Tesco, Aldi, and Musgrave (Centra).
In August 2024, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a product recall notice. This included batches of Comeragh Still Irish Still (5L, 6 x 2L, 24 x 500ml) and Sparkling Water (6 x 2L) supplied to Aldi. The FSAI released a statement stating that the recall was due to the possible presence of visible particles, potentially caused by damage in the filtration system within the water bottling facility.
On August 8th, CMW stopped production immediately and initiated a borewell cleaning programme. The company sources its water from four borewells on its site, which it says delivers over 100,000 litres of water every hour.
CMW believes that the cause of the contamination was from a “third-party source”.
Unfortunately for CMW, the financial pressure was too much. The halt in operations forced the directors to enter an insolvency administration process. This has raised serious concerns about the future of the company’s 81 employees.
Health Implications of Contaminated Bottled Water
The identity of the contamination found in CMW’s products is not known, other than the visible particles noted by FSAI. But this is not the first case of contaminated bottled water. Common bottled water contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants: Bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. These contaminants are often linked to source water or filtration failures.
- Physical contaminants: Visible particles such as sediment, plastic fragments, glass, or filter media. This is typically caused by equipment or filtration damage and is the likely culprit for CMW.
- Chemical contaminants: Heavy metals, nitrates, pesticides, or industrial chemicals. This may originate from source water or bottling infrastructure. This is a common problem in Irish waterways.
- Microplastics: Tiny plastic particles shed from bottles, caps, or during processing.
These contaminants can cause illness, in particular gastrointestinal infections. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Long-term health problems may also arise depending on the contaminant and level of exposure.
