Kate is the co-founder of Southern Scientific Services Ltd. Under her leadership Southern Scientific Services Ltd has grown to be one of the largest and most well equipped privately owned laboratories in Ireland and is now a leading provider of analytical and consulting services in the country. Kate is responsible for the marketing and business management of the company and works to ensure that the company continuously delivers the superior quality of laboratory service to all its customers for which it is well known.

External Consultant to the Chemical Lab and Environmental Consultancy
Michael is a Director of Southern Scientific Services Ltd and is an external consultant to the Laboratory and Environmental Consultancy Service. Michael brings impressive skills to the company in the solving of complex problems for customers. As well as expertise in sampling, testing, monitoring, and the evaluation of scientific results, he has extensive experience in Environmental Management and Analysis. In his professional capacity as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemistry, Science, Engineering, and Maths at the Institute of Technology Tralee, Michael is engaged in research in a number of areas.
Education: Michael holds a Masters in Science from Trinity College, Dublin
Dr. Conor Murphy
Conor’s main role is to ensure that all managers have the required resources to carry out their tasks and that samples are processed efficiently whilst retaining a high level of quality. Conor oversees the development and validation of soil and water analytical methods.
Education: Conor is a Ph.D. graduate from University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom
Dr. Paul Byrne
Environmental & Planning Consultancy Manager
Paul joined the company in 2008 as an Environmental Consultant. In his current role as Environmental Consultancy Manager Paul has responsibility for the co-ordination of environmental consultancy work at the company as well as playing a key role as senior environmental consultant within the environmental consultancy department. Paul is directly involved in the co-ordination of environmental impact assessments & planning applications; ecological assessments; environmental audits and reviews; waste licence and discharge licence applications; developing monitoring programmes and pollution investigations; groundwater and surface water assessments; air and noise monitoring and various environmental compliance assessments. Paul has in excess of 15 years of experience in environmental research and consultancy.
Education: Paul is a Ph.D. graduate from the University of Limerick
Chemical & Environmental Lab Manager
Ruth is currently the Chemical & Environmental Laboratory Manager but maintains an active role in performing various laboratory tests. Ruth has previously worked in the mining and tribology industries in Australia and has further developed her experience in analytical science, especially in the areas of elemental analysis, major cations and anions, and environmental parameters. Ruth is competent in a range of techniques, such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, UV-visible and visible spectrometry and gas chromatography.
Education: Ruth holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Science from University College, Cork
Dr. Gerard Hehir
Microbiology & Food Lab Manager
Ger manages the Microbiology & Food laboratory whilst holding a major role in daily analysis and testing. Ger has responsibility for performing and overseeing laboratory workflows, training of staff and management of laboratory facilities as well as liaising with clients to meet their needs.
Upon completion of his PhD in 2014, Ger spent five years working in Teagasc, where he gained extensive experience in project management and research skills in the areas of Molecular biology, Microbiology and Agricultural science.
Dr. Catriona Donovan
Catriona joined the Quality team in 2016. Her role encompasses the continuous development, implementation and maintenance of the quality management system in accordance with ISO 17025:2005, promoting quality assurance, training staff and auditing the QMS. Catriona has a wealth of experience and analytical skills in the areas of Biochemistry and Microbiology.
Education: Catriona completed a Ph.D at University of Cologne, Germany
Norma Mc Kenna
Soil & Agricultural Material Lab Manager
Norma was appointed as Environmental Consultant at Southern Scientific Services in 2000. Later she became Environmental Consultancy Manager and based on her knowledge and capability was appointed Soil Laboratory Manager in 2009. Since then she has been instrumental in the development of the soil laboratory at Southern Scientific Services.
Her strengths are managing the laboratory work flows within a quality compliant environment, and liaising with customers to interpret results and provide technical advice.
Education: Norma holds an Agricultural Science Degree from University College, Dublin
Deborah is currently the Financial Controller for Southern Scientific Services. She is accountable for the accounting operations of the company and ensures that the company is operating effectively and efficiently.
Education: Deborah holds an Honours BA Degree from University College, Cork
