What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is the principle that new land development should leave the environment in a better condition than before.

A BNG assessment examines how developments might affect the environment. This type of assessment ensures that land is developed in a way that helps improve its biodiversity.

BNG focuses on:

  • Avoiding harm to important ecological features.

  • Minimising unavoidable damage.

  • Improving the value of existing natural features.

  • Adding new ecological features that were not there before.

Why are Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments needed?

BNG assessments are important because of increasing environmental concerns and regulations.

In England, the Environment Act 2021 requires that most new developments increase biodiversity by at least 10%. BNG is not yet a formal requirement in Ireland. However, many local authorities, developers, and businesses have started using these principles.

As awareness of BNG grows, it is becoming an essential part of planning for developments across the UK & Ireland. Future laws are expected to make these principles standard policies.

Who are Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments for?

BNG assessments are recommended for:

  • Land Developers: To help them meet the latest environmental rules for their projects.

  • Local Authorities: To evaluate the environmental impact of proposed developments and decide whether to approve them.

  • Utility Providers & Infrastructure Projects: For large-scale developments that must meet sustainability goals.

  • Landowners: Who want to improve the ecological value of their land while developing it.

Our process for Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments

(1) Initial Consultation

We discuss your project to understand its potential impact on nature.

(2) Pre-Development Field Survey

Our ecologists visit the site to assess the current biodiversity, collect data, and identify important species and features.

(3) Post-Development Habitat Definition

We look at the development plans to understand what the environment will look like after construction.

(4) Biodiversity Assessment

We calculate the biodiversity units for both the current and post-development habitats. These units show whether there is a gain or loss in biodiversity.

(5) Reporting & Recommendations

We provide a detailed report on how the development impacts biodiversity. If there is a loss, we suggest ways to improve the site’s ecology.
