What is a Bird Survey?

A bird survey monitors bird populations, behaviours, and habitats to track biodiversity and assess environmental impact. It involves species identification, counting, and observing nesting, migration, and habitat use.

These surveys highlight a site’s ecological value and ensure that developments protect vulnerable bird species. They are also crucial for meeting legal requirements in Ireland under the Wildlife Act and EU Birds Directive.

Different types of Bird Surveys

There are different types of bird surveys, each focused on specific ecological needs or projects. Some of the most common surveys are:

Wintering Bird Survey: Track bird species that migrate to Ireland for the winter, usually from northern areas. Performed September ➜ March.

Breeding Bird Surveys: Focus on species that breed in Ireland. Performed from March ➜ July.

Vantage Point Surveys: Observe bird flight paths to assess the risk of birds colliding with wind turbines.

Endangered Species Surveys: Focus on species that need protection (e.g. Hen Harrier, Curlew, or Barn Owl). They are often part of environmental impact assessments (EIA).
