What is Waste Classification?

Waste classification is the process of analyzing the chemical makeup of waste to decide if it is:

• Hazardous

• Non-Hazardous

This step is required by law. Waste producers have a legal “duty of care” to classify waste so it can be collected, transported, disposed of, or recovered safely. It’s important to know that waste classification is not the same as WAC (waste acceptance criteria) testing. WAC testing does not classify waste. Instead, it comes later in the waste management process, which is explained below.

Stage 1: Waste Classification

Lab testing is performed first to find out if the waste is hazardous or non-hazardous. This information guides how the waste should be stored, moved, or disposed of (in a landfill, for example).

Stage 2: WAC Testing

WAC testing happens after classification. It helps determine whether waste can go into one of the following types of landfills:

• Inert

• Non-Hazardous

• Stable Non-Reactive Hazardous

• Hazardous

Why is Waste Classification important?

Many waste producers focus only on WAC testing, but this is a mistake. WAC testing is less detailed than waste classification. If you skip proper classification, you could misidentify waste and face legal repercussions.

Proper waste classification offers many benefits:
