Irish Rail Fuel Leak: Diesel Has Been Entering the River Liffey for Over 14 Months

Diesel has been leaking into the River Liffey near the Samuel Beckett Bridge since at least early 2025. The source is an underground pipe connected to an Irish Rail diesel storage facility that fuels trains at Connolly Station. The leak was discovered in March 2025 and, 14 months later, has still not been repaired.

How the Leak Was Discovered

Irish Rail believes diesel had been entering the Liffey for “a number of weeks” before authorities discovered it. When the leak was first identified, Dublin Port immediately activated its oil spill response procedures. This included deploying oil booms and absorbent materials to limit the spread of fuel on the water.

Further investigation by Dublin City Council traced the source to a series of underground culverts beneath the quays. Irish Rail then contracted a specialist company to begin environmental protection and remediation works, including the containment measures currently in place.

A floating barrier has been placed in the water close to the Samuel Beckett Bridge to prevent the diesel from spreading further downstream.

The Impact of Diesel on River Liffey Life

Diesel is acutely toxic to aquatic life and can cause serious harm even at low concentrations. The Liffey in Dublin city centre supports a variety of species, including perch and roach. These species are sensitive to this pollution. Exposure can affect how fish breathe, feed, and reproduce.

The longer a pollution incident continues unresolved, the harder it becomes to restore the ecosystem to its previous condition.

What the Authorities Have Said

Irish Rail, Dublin City Council, and Dublin Port have all confirmed their involvement in the response.

Dublin City Council confirmed it is “aware of, and is overseeing, the ongoing response” to the pollution incident and will continue to monitor the situation alongside relevant authorities.

Irish Rail stated that containment and recovery measures have “prevented diesel from entering the watercourse beyond the immediate area” since they were put in place, and that a specialist contractor is carrying out remediation works on their behalf.

Dublin Port confirmed it remains “in close contact with all relevant parties” to support continued containment efforts and the protection of the Liffey.
