Poor Air Quality in Ireland

Many recent studies show the same trend: air quality in parts of Ireland is not meeting safe standards. The concern is over two pollutants in particular:

  • Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) – Mainly from vehicle emissions, especially diesel engines
  • PM2.5 Particles (PM2.5) – Tiny airborne particles from burning fuels that can reach deep into the lungs

In certain areas, especially during colder months, levels of these pollutants exceed EU & Irish guidelines. These pollutants are often found in areas with high foot traffic – meaning people are walking and breathing in this bad air daily.

Air Pollution ‘Hotspots’

As some areas are more urbanised than others, pollution hotspots exist within cities. Research from UCD & DCU, focusing on Dublin, showed that the areas most affected by air quality are in the north inner city. These include busy roads, junctions, and areas surrounded by tall buildings that trap traffic emissions.

The same study used data from Google Street View cars to show pollution levels can change significantly from one street to the next. This “hyperlocal” monitoring found that even within a few hundred metres, air quality can go from safe to harmful.

These findings suggest that some people may be exposed to far more pollution just because of where they live, work, or attend school.

The Health Risks

Air pollution is deadly. According to Ireland’s Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, four people die every day from air pollution in Ireland.

Short- and long-term health effects of air pollution include:

  • Asthma and respiratory flare-ups
  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Stroke
  • Reduced brain function, especially in children and older adults

Even low pollution levels, when exposure is long-term, can reduce life expectancy and increase hospital admissions.

Impact on the Environment

When the air suffers, so does the natural world. Aside from affecting our health, air pollution also harms the environment. Pollutants in the air have disastrous effects on forests, rivers, soil, and wildlife. Specific environmental impacts of air pollution in Ireland include:

  • Acid rain, caused by poor air quality, damages trees and soil.
  • Nitrogen buildup in lakes and rivers, harming aquatic life.
  • Lower crop yields due to pollutants affecting plant growth.
  • Loss of biodiversity in ecosystems across Ireland.

Key Sources of Air Pollution in Ireland

So, where does all this air pollution in Ireland come from? According to a report from EPA, there are two areas that are Ireland’s biggest hurdles to cleaner air. These are:

Cars, buses, and trucks, especially those that run on diesel, release large amounts of NO₂ and PM2.5.

Real-world evidence: A Dutch study tracked 120,000 people aged 55–69 for 10 years to see how traffic pollution affected their health. It found that living near a road with increased traffic intensity increased the risk of dying from lung conditions by 10%.

Burning solid fuels like coal, peat, or wood releases harmful particles into the air. This is especially a problem during winter when people use fires and stoves more often.

Real-world evidence: On Sept 1, 1990, the Irish Government banned the marketing, sale, and distribution of bituminous coals within the city of Dublin. An intervention study from St. James’ Hospital assessed the effect of this coal ban on death in Dublin. The research showed respiratory deaths reduced by 15.5%. This shows how dangerous burning solid fuels can be.

The Need for ‘Hyperlocal’ Air Monitoring

To fix a problem, we first need to understand it clearly. That’s why air quality monitoring is so important. The UCD & DCU study using street-level monitoring shows that traditional methods may miss important local details.

By measuring air quality on a much smaller scale (block by block), we can better understand where the action is needed most.

This detailed data helps city planners, health officials, and the public make smarter choices. For example:

  • Schools might avoid outdoor activities during times of poor air quality.
  • Cities might consider introducing new road routes to divert traffic from high-risk areas.
  • Governments can design stronger regulations based on real-world evidence.
